Social marketing is a mass-media approach that is increasingly used in sustainability and behaviour change communications. Often presented through TV, radio or billboard campaigns, it utilises specific motivators to elicit emotional, and consequently, behavioural responses. For example, messages may suggest that a particular behaviour will increase an individual’s sense of personal satisfaction by showing that they are contributing to the wider community, being recognised for their efforts or overcoming a challenge.

Personal marketing takes social marketing a step further, often utilising specific tools, messages and information which are tailored to a target community, school, business, household, or even an individual’s needs.
